When it comes to choosing a car in the United Kingdom, there are several body types available, each catering to different preferences and needs. One of the least popular options on our subscription and short-term car lease services is the Saloon car.
A Saloon car combines elegance, comfort and performance in a sleek and sophisticated package. In this guide we will delve into what exactly a saloon car is, compare it to other body styles like hatchbacks and estate car and highlight some of the top saloon car choices available, including electric models.
What is a Saloon Car?
A saloon car, also known as a Sedan in many countries, is a four-door passenger car characterised by its enclosed cabin, separate boot compartment and a stylish design that emphasises a cohesive and polished appearance. Saloon cars offer a balance between comfort, practicality and driving performance. They are often favoured by those who appriciate a more traditional and sophisticated driving experience.
Saloon vs. Hatchback vs. Estate Car - Key Differences
Lets have a look at the key differences between a Saloon Car, Hatchback and an Estate:
Saloon vs. Hatchback
Design: Saloon cars typically have a longer body with a distinct separation between the cabin and the boot, resulting in a more formal appearance. Hatchbacks have a shorter rear end and the rear window usually opens upwards along with the tailgate.
Boot Space: Saloon cars offer a dedicated boot compartment, which provides ample storage space for luggage and groceries, access can be restricted for larger bulkier items such as suitcases or strollers. Hatchbacks, on the other hand, have a rear seat that folds down, creatiing a larger storage area accessible from the cabin.
Practicality: Saloon cars might have more refinded styling, but hatchbacks tend to offer greater versatility, when it comes to transporting larger or bulkier items.
Saloon vs. Estate Car
Boot Space: Estate cars, also know as sports tourers, avants or station wagons, have an elongated body design that extends into the rear, creating a larger boot space than most saloon cars.
Versatility: Estate cars are designed with versatility in mind, making them suitable for families or individuals who require extra storage capacity for a set of golf clubs, luggage or even pets.

If the vehicle has three distinct sections; Bonnet, Cabin and a Boot and the glass doesn’t lift up with the boot lid, then in reality the vehicle is a saloon and not a coupé.
