Volvo is a Swedish vehicle manufacturer and owned by Zhejan Geely Holding Group in China (Correct as of 2014). It was owned by Volvo Group (AB Volvo) until 1999, when it was purchased by Ford Motor Company.
Volvo was founded in 1927 in Gothenburg in Sweden, with their main focus being safety in vehicles. The trademark was first registered by the holding company SKF on the 11th May 1915 and originally intended to be used in the process of ball bearing manufacturing. The first Volvo vehicle was produced on the production line in the 14th April 1927 and was named the Volvo OV4.
Volvo has a high involvement in Vehicle Safety history, notably in 1944 the Volvo PV Model was the first to have laminated glass. Nils Bohlin, a Volvo Engineer also designed and patented the 3 point safety belt, which became standard on Volvo vehicles in 1959, the design of this became free to use by other vehicle manufacturers in the interest of saftey and is still used in vehicles today.
