Skoda Auto is an vehicle manufacturer based in the Czech Republic and was founded in 1895 by Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement. It was originally called Laurin & Klement before it was aqquired by Skoda Works in 1925. Since 2000, it has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen Group.
Volkswagen Group took a 30% share in 1991, at this point Skoda was producing rear engined saloons. VW Group introduced a number of refinements to the Skoda range and over time the quality and reliability improved dramatically.
Skoda also has a past in Motorsport and became a partcipant in the FIA World Rally Championship in 1999 using improved models of the Skoda Octavia.
Skoda currently produce a wide range of vehicles, based loosely on their VW counterparts, such as the Skoda Yeti which is more or less a VW Tiguan.
