Renault is a French Vehicle Manufacturer and was founded in 1899 by Louis Renault, Marcel Renault and Fernand Renault. Renault produces not only cars and commercial vehicles, but has made tractors, trucks, tanks, buses and coaches in the past.
The Renault Voituretter 1CV, the first Renault car, was sold to Louis Renault’s friend after a successful test drive. The customer was so impressed about how the car ran and how it climbed the streets that he purchased it.
In 1903, Renault started to manufacture their own engines. Its first big transaction was in 1905 to the Societe des Automobiles de Place, which purchased Renault AG1 cars to run as a fleet of taxis. These vehicles were then used by the French Military in World War 1 for transporting troops.
Renault was an early runner in motorsport as the brothers Louis and Marcel Renault, as they believed that the publicity that could be created by racing Renault company vehicles was doing a lot of good. Marcel was killed in the 1903 Paris to Madrid Race and Louis never raced again, but that didn’t stop Renault being involved in motorsport and is still a major player providing engines and its own team in the Formula One.
Renault have had some very popular models in the past including the Renault 5 which was launched in January 1972. The Renault Clio was also another very popular model.
