Abarth is part of the Fiat Group Automobiles but was original founded by Carlo Abarth and Armando Scagliarini in Bologna on 31st March 1949. They started by manufacturing high performance exhausts and raced Cisitalia Cars.
Fiat bought Abarth on 31st July 1971, after many years of racing a mixture of Porsche 904’s and Ferrari Dino’s, but concentrating making exhausts for Fiat. Under Fiat’s ownership, Abarth became the group’s racing department, preparing Fiat’s rally cars such as the Fiat 124 and the 131. They also helped develop the Lancia 037 rally car.
In the 2000’s Fiat used the Abarth brand on a number of models including the Fiat Stilo Abarth.
In 2007, Fiat relaunched the Abarth brand with the Grande Punto Abarth, the brand is once again separate from Fiat.
Current Abarth models include the Abarth Punto Evo, the Abarth 500 and the Abarth 500C.
