The crossover market is certainly a growing market with just about every man and his dog offering a crossover version of an existing model, and Mercedes have been no different with the GLA.
The GLA is unmistakably based on the same architecture as the CLA saloon model and the A-Class but needless to say that there is certainly demand for the GLA.
If you’re looking for a crossover then the Mercedes GLA is entry level and one that will help you make the decision of whether a crossover is for you.
Although the price is fairly high in comparison to other crossovers considered to be direct rivals, such as the Nissan Qashqui, the Mercedes offerings are certainly worth the extra few quid.
It’s important to note that the Mercedes GLA is a crossover rather than a compact SUV. You’ll find the driving position is more like a five door family vehicle and the ground clearance is 185mm.
The UK will see Mercedes offer the GLA200 CDI with the options of SE and AMG Line, there will be a choice of gearbox; the six-speed manual or the seven-speed auto and if emissions are your concern you’ll find the CO2 to be 119g/km, this is set to be different on the 4Matic model due in later this year. The engine emits 134 brake horse and 221lbs on torque.
In terms of comfort and driving position you’ll be pleasantly surprised if you’re not familiar with a crossover and comfort suspension comes as standard on SE models. If you decide to opt for the ‘Sport’ option on the AMG Line, even this is still comfortable in comparison to rival models.
If boot space is a concern, you’ll be pleased to know there is plenty. This coupled with great looks, an excellent drive and engineering that you can rely on the GLA is certainly more than a just an introduction into the crossover world.
