If you haven’t seen or heard about this amazing car manufacturer, where have you been?
Tesla was founded 13 years ago (2003) in the United States by a Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, prior to Elon Musk’s involvement, with the primary goal of commercialising electric vehicles.
Tesla began with the sporty Roadster, a fully electric sports car capable of travelling 200 miles per charge. This beautiful piece of engineering was well received by members of the public looking for the thrill of a sports car whilst still giving a nod to looking after the environment. The first ‘Signature 100’ Roadsters sold out in less than 3 weeks.
The Tesla Roadster was introduced to UK roads in 2010 after they began producing right-hand drives of the model. In 2012 Tesla were destined to sell more than 2,400 Roadsters throughout 31 countries in the month of September alone! Tesla was certainly making headway in to achieving their dream.
The announcement of the beautiful Model S came in June 2008 and was to become the world’s best selling plug-in electric vehicle of 2015, it’s not difficult to see why!
The sexy exterior hides a multitude of exciting features, firstly, the car is all-wheel drive thus providing great road handling and will laugh in the face of any snow the British roads might encounter.
The Model S has a Euro NCAP 5 Star Safety rating and is capable of over 330 miles range. It’s Autopilot feature (providing a 360 degree buffer zone around the car) allows the Model S to steer within a lane, change lanes with a tap of a turn signal and manage speed by using active traffic-aware cruise control. The digital control of the motors, steering and brakes is designed to avoid collisions from both the front and the side and if that wasn’t enough, the Model S can also detect parking spaces and if needed can parallel park on demand. Still not impressed? How does 0-60mph in just 2.8 seconds sound!?
The Model S hasn’t been short of praise! Amongst other awards, this understated beauty won ‘2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year’, ‘2013 World Green Car’, ‘Car of the year 2013’ by Automobile Magazine as well as Time Magazine ‘Best 25 Inventions of the Year 2012 Awards’.
The Roadster and Model S aren’t the only vehicles available from Tesla. The Model X (a full-size crossover SUV), which began coming off the production line and being shipped to customers back in September 2015, is also available and 2016 eagerly awaits Tesla’s unveiling of the Model 3 which will have a range of 200 miles with deliveries expected to begin in late 2017.
