Manufacturer History

Porsche was founded in Stuttgart, Germany in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche. The company initially offered development and consulting and did not build any cars under its own name. Its first assignment, from the German Government was to design a “car for the people.” This resulted in the Volkswagen Beetle, on of the most successful and easily recognised cars of all time. The Porsche 64 was developed using many components from the VW Beetle and was launched in 1939.

At the end of the World War II, in 1945. Ferdinand Porsche lost his Chairman position and was arrested for War Crimes, but was never tried. Ivan Hirst, a British Army Major was put in charge of the factory.

Ferry Porsche (Ferdinand’s son) decided to build his own car, because he couldn’t find anything that he liked on the market. Ferry also helped the company through one of its toughest times until his fathers release in 1947. When they hit their targets, production was started and the Porsche 356 was launched, many people regrd this as the first Porsche.

After the war, parts for cars were in short supply, so the Porsche 356 used many parts from the VW Beetle including the engine case. Eventually though, most parts were replaced by Porsche made parts and in 1954 the Porsche 356 engines had specifically designed engine cases.

In 1964 Porsche developed the Porsche 911, a 6 cylinder rear engined sports car, this car is still available as a model number today and has changed very little from the original 60’s design.
