Manufacturer History

Land Rover is a British Brand and is part of Jaguar Land Rover, the Land Rover side concentrates on Four Wheel Drive vehicles. It is currently owned by Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rovers headquarters are based in Whitley, Coventry.

After Jeep, Land Rover is the 2nd oldest Four Wheel Drive Car Brand in the World, originally launched by Rover in 1948 and produced just one specific model, simply named the Land Rover. Land Rover itself has only been incorporated since 1978, previously it was integrated into the Rover Company’s range of vehicles, the ongoing success of this model and later on the Range Rover, prompted the establishment of a separate identity and corporation.

Over the years, the Land Rover Series has developed and evolved into what it has become today, with very little differences from the original 1948 model. But the model range has grown with the introduction of the Defender (Based on the 1948 model), Discovery, Freelander, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque.

The original Land Rover was designed by Maurice Wilks in 1947, the chief designer of the Rover Company. It was inspired by World War 2 American Jeeps that he had used at his holiday home in Wales. The first Land Rover prototype was nicknamed ‘Centre Steer’
