Manufacturer History

Jaguar Cars is a brand of Jaguar Land Rover which has been owned by Tata Motors since 2008, after it was purchased from Ford.

Jaguar was founded in 1922 by Sir William Lyons and William Walmsley as the Swallow Sidecar Company, originally manufacturing sidecars for motorcycles. After World War II, the name was changed to Jaguar to avoid the initials of SS. The British Motor Corporation purchased Jaguar in 1966 resulting in a larger company renamed as British Motor Holdings which eventually merged with Leyland Motors Corporation in 1968.

Jaguar floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1984, becoming part of the FTSE 100 until it was aqquired by Ford in 1990. Jaguar also holds Royal Warrants from Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles.

Jaguars cars are designed in JLR’s engineering centres at Gaydon and Whitley in Coventry. The majority of Jaguars are manufactured at the Castle Bromwich Assembly Plant.

Jaguar made its name by producing some of the most iconic vehicles of the century, including the Jaguar XK120, Jaguar XK140, Jaguar XK150 and the beautiful Jaguar E-Type, the sports cars were also successful in internation motorsport.

Jaguars Engines are long living, with the Twin OHC XK Engine being put into their vehicles from 1969 right through until 1992.  A properly maintained XK Engine could see 200,000 miles of road over its life.

Jaguar have a wide range of vehicles on offer including the fantastic Jaguar XF, which helped turn heads and replaced the heavily critisced S Type. Other models in the range include the new F Type as a convertible and a coupe and the Jaguar XJ, in 2015 the Jaguar XE will be produced.
