From the 7th July 2024, new cars sold in Europe will have to be fitted with a speed limiter, however, Great Britain will not be adopting these rules, yet they will still apply for Northern Ireland.
A new regulation called 2019/2044 regulation by the European Commission means that cars must be fitted with an Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA), if a vehicle has been built and unregistered, this function needs to be retrofitted before they can be sold.
Great Britain Excluded
It is know that Great Britain will not be adopting these EU rules and the Department for Transport (DfT) will not be affected by this new EU regulation., but will will apply to those cars sold in Northern Ireland.
What is a Speed Limiter?
We’re regular users of a speed limiter in the Cocoon Vehicles office, with so many speed cameras around the Derbyshire region, they help with those driving and have a lapse of concentration, it’s very easy for your right foot to feel heavier, increasing the speed on a motorway or back road.
Speed limiters are a great safety device that you use on your car, where you set the limit and the car will not go above that set speed unless you turn the system off, or go past a point on your accelerator.
It is not the same as Cruise Control where it maintains a constant speed without the input of the accelerator, as a speed limit requires you to speed up or slow down, but stops you from speeding over the set limit.
What is Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA)?
Most modern cars are now fitted with a system called Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA), this function uses GPS Data and/or traffic sign recognition to determine the maximum speed you can do in that particular area.
Alerts via displays, haptic or sound will let you know if you are speeding and some systems can reduce the throttle to ensure you don’t go over the speed limit in that area, of course, they can also be disabled where applicable.
To overide the system, push down hard on the accelerator or disable the system (where applicable) in the system settings.
