Electric Vehicle Ownership

Whether your leasing, own or subscribe to an Electric Car, we’d like to give our readers a few tips on Electric Car Ownership and how to get the best out of your vehicle.

Electric Car Ownership is on a huge rise at the moment. Figures show a huge 184% increase in new EV’s in September 2020 compared with the previous year and account for 5.4% of all new cars.

Top 3 Tips to Electric Car Ownership

3. Look after your battery

The most expensive part of your electric car is the battery and whilst many of the manufacturers such as Tesla and Renault offer long warranties on this part of the car, its still really important to make sure you care for the condition.

Avoid charging the battery to 100% unless you’re going on a long-trip. Continuous full charges for the battery cells can degrade the battery overtime, just like it can your smartphone.

If your regular commute is 20-30 miles per day, charge it to 65% capacity, even at this sort of range, in something like the Tesla Model 3, you’re likely to get at least 130 miles on the Standard Range model.

2. Do your homework before a trip

Its really important to do your homework before making that long trip in an electric cars. Not all vehicles have a wide range of charging options, so downloading an App such as Zap Map can be a huge benefit.

Research any hotels you might stay in that may have chargers, but be prepared that due to the increase in EV’s cars on the road, you might not be the only electric car requiring a top-up.

Ensure you have a backup in case of a charger malfunction, most cities are now geared up for Electric Cars and even some supermarkets have rolled out some really easy to use units.

1. Charging Point Etiquette

Its really important that all Electric Car owners, use the same set of rules when using chargers, and as EV car owners, we have already witnessed some arguements and disagreements at charging points in and around the UK.

Firstly, treat the public car chargers with respect, as if they were owned by you. Put the cables and leads back neatly after use and try avoid any tripping hazards. If the unit is faulty, you can report this to other users on Zap Map within seconds.

Try not to hog the charger, with many units now offering super quick charging times, try and only top the battery up with enough juice to get you home. Especially if there is a queue like you see at many of the Tesla Superchargers.

Never unplug another drivers vehicle, even if you think that your Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) has a higher priority than a Plugin-Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) – Yes we have seen this issue at charging stations!

Don’t use an EV charger as a parking spot. We’ve seen this happen at our local supermarket, with an Electric Car parking in the EV spot and not actually using the charger at all. This caused another EV driver to park in the standard space and try and get the cables to reach.
