Drivers that kill will face life sentences from 2021

New Legislation from 2021

New legislation promised by the Government to sentence drivers who cause death or serious injury from 2021.

Drivers who cause death whilst speeding, using a mobile phone or racing will face life sentences from 2021 when the new legislation is introduced by the Government.

On top of this, Drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs could also be sentenced to life in prison under the new reforms.

At the moment the recommended sentence is 14 days, which will be increased to life.

Those drivers who cause life-changing injuries by careless driving will also see a new offence created to help deliver justice for victims.

In 2019, 174 people were sentenced in UK courts for causing death by dangerous driving, whilst a further 19 were convicted of causing death by carless driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs.
