A new digital driving licence is on the horizon, set to be rolled out as part of the government’s latest digital initiative. The scheme, which aims to modernise access to official documents, will allow motorists to carry a digital version of their licence on their smartphones.
Misplacing a plastic driving licence is a common inconvenience, but the upcoming app could make that a thing of the past. The digital version will be part of the Gov.uk App and Wallet, a centralised platform that will give users access to key information such as driving licence details, MOT expiry dates, and benefit payments.
The digital licence can also serve as proof of identity and age verification in shops and online platforms, offering a convenient alternative to carrying physical documents.
When Will It Be Available?
The government first outlined plans for the digital overhaul earlier this year, confirming that initial features of the Gov.uk Wallet would become available in stages from this summer.
Veterans will be among the first to use the new platform, starting with access to a digital version of the veteran card. A trial version of the digital driving licence is expected to follow, although an exact launch date has not yet been confirmed.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander described the development as “a major step forward for millions who use their licence for identification,” adding that the initiative “gives individuals greater control and simplifies everyday interactions.”
What Is the Digital Driving Licence?
The digital licence will act as an online counterpart to the traditional photocard, allowing drivers to prove they are legally entitled to drive without needing the physical version. It will also be valid as a form of ID in a wide range of settings.
Who Will It Affect?
There are currently around 50 million full and provisional licence holders in the UK. While all drivers must hold a valid and up-to-date licence, they are not legally required to carry it at all times. However, if requested by a police officer, the licence must be presented at a police station within seven days.
The digital option will be entirely voluntary, with physical photocards continuing to be issued as standard for both provisional and full licences.
Benefits and Features
Users of the app will be able to view their driving record, check for any endorsements or penalty points, and renew their licence directly through the platform. Built-in encryption and two-factor authentication aim to enhance security and reduce the risk of fraud or misuse.
What Else Will the Gov.uk Wallet Include?
Beyond the driving licence, the digital wallet is designed to hold a range of official documents, including DBS checks, the veteran card, and other government-issued credentials.
Although digital documents will be readily available, physical copies will remain valid and continue to be issued where necessary. One of the key benefits of the app is the ability to access documents immediately after application, removing the need to wait for postal delivery.
Looking ahead, the government plans to expand the app’s functionality further, allowing users to perform tasks such as cancelling a stolen passport, applying for apprenticeships, or submitting benefit applications.
