We took the i4 eDrive40 M Sport straight from our Belper office and pointed it south down the M1 before peeling off onto the A50, cutting across to Ashbourne and then looping back through the quieter, more technical roads via Turnditch. A proper mixed route. The kind that shows you exactly what a car is about.
And what this one is about is balance.
On the road: quietly brilliant
From the first few miles, the i4 feels instantly familiar. Low-slung, planted and confidence-inspiring, it flows down the road with the composure you’d expect from a BMW Gran Coupé. The 250kW electric power delivery is smooth and immediate, but never aggressive or artificial. It just builds pace effortlessly.
Through the bends around Ashbourne and back via Turnditch, the i4 stayed composed and predictable, shrinking around you in a way that makes you forget it’s an electric car at all. Steering is precise, body control is excellent and the whole thing feels engineered rather than programmed.
In short: it drives exactly how a BMW should.
Tech that enhances the journey
Navigation duties were handled via Apple CarPlay, which worked seamlessly. Maps displayed clearly across both the Digital Cockpit and the central curved screen, making directions easy to follow without distraction.
Music? Spotify, of course – with Ed Sheeran streaming away as our most-played artist from this year’s Spotify Wrapped. Sound quality was excellent, and switching between navigation and media felt completely intuitive. This is in-car tech done properly.
Comfort and practicality
The i4 Gran Coupé strikes a great balance between sporty design and everyday usability. Seats are comfortable and supportive, making longer journeys feel effortless. Rear-seat space proved more than generous for the kids, who had plenty of room to stretch out.
Boot space is another highlight. The Gran Coupé opening makes loading easy, and there’s enough room for family life, work gear or a weekend away without compromise.
Living with the BMW i4
Range never became a talking point – which is exactly how it should be. The 83.9kWh battery simply gets on with the job, letting you focus on the drive rather than the charge level.
Whether cruising on the motorway or enjoying flowing country roads, the i4 feels refined, solid and confidence-inspiring throughout.

The BMW i4 Gran Coupé eDrive40 M Sport is a standout electric car because it doesn’t try too hard to be one. It looks right, feels right and drives right. It’s comfortable, practical and engaging – a rare combination in the EV world.
