The 26 Plate Has Arrived: Understanding the UK Car Registration System

The 1st of March marks one of the biggest dates in the UK automotive calendar — the launch of the new vehicle registration plate.

In 2026, this means the arrival of the 26 plate, which will appear on all newly registered vehicles from 1 March 2026 until the next plate change in September.

For drivers, it’s often seen as the moment when the newest vehicles hit the road. For the motor industry, it’s one of the busiest periods of the year.

At Cocoon Vehicles, we’re also seeing strong demand, with a range of 26 plate vehicles available on our Flexible Car Subscription service and Short-Term Car Lease agreements, including our most popular 12-month contracts. There are also still a number of pre-registered 75 plate vehicles available, which can offer excellent value.

Before diving into what’s available, it’s worth understanding how the UK number plate system actually works.

How the UK Car Registration System Works

The current UK registration system was introduced in September 2001. Each registration plate contains three key components:

Example:

AB26 CDE

Element

Example

Meaning

Local Memory Tag

AB

Indicates where the vehicle was first registered

Age Identifier

26

Shows the year and registration period

Random Letters

CDE

Randomly generated letters

Together, these create a unique registration number for every vehicle registered in the UK.

The Age Identifier: Why We Now Have a 26 Plate

The two numbers in the middle indicate when the vehicle was registered.

The system changes twice a year:

  • March: new year identifier

  • September: same number plus 50

For example:

Release Date

Plate

March 2025

25

September 2025

75

March 2026

26

September 2026

76

This pattern will continue for decades to come.

What Do the First Two Letters Mean?

The first two letters of a number plate indicate the DVLA registration region where the vehicle was first registered.

These are known as local memory tags.

For example:

Prefix

Region

LA – LY

London

MA – MY

Manchester / Merseyside

NA – NY

North East England

OA – OY

Oxford

PA – PY

Preston

SA – SY

Scotland

VA – VY

Severn Valley

WA – WY

West of England

YA – YY

Yorkshire

The first letter generally represents a wider region, while the second letter narrows it down further.

This system replaced the older regional registration identifiers used before 2001.

Understanding UK Car Registrations

Why March and September Are Important

The March and September plate changes traditionally create strong demand for new vehicles.

Many drivers prefer to wait for the newest registration plate before taking delivery of a new car. As a result, dealerships and leasing providers typically see higher order volumes around these dates.

However, the plate change can also create opportunities — particularly with pre-registered vehicles from the previous plate cycle.

26 Plate Vehicles Available Now

With the 26 plate now live, we have a range of new vehicles arriving on our Flexible Car Subscription service.

This allows drivers to access a new vehicle without committing to long-term finance or ownership.

We also offer Short-Term Car Lease agreements, typically between 6 and 18 months, with 12 months remaining the most popular contract length.

This flexibility can be particularly useful for:

  • Company directors

  • Contract workers

  • Expats relocating to the UK

  • Drivers wanting a new vehicle without multi-year commitments

Alongside our 26 plate arrivals, we still have a selection of pre-registered 75 plate vehicles available, which can represent strong value depending on availability.

Final Thoughts

The arrival of the 26 plate marks another milestone in the UK automotive calendar.

Understanding how the registration system works — from the age identifier to regional memory tags — makes it easier to recognise exactly when and where a vehicle was first registered.

If you are considering a new vehicle this year, the 26 plate launch is an ideal time to explore the latest models now becoming available.
