The 2017 VW Golf

Although we won’t see a completely new Golf until the revised version comes available in 2018, the 2017 model has had a facelift.

The 2017 edition will see only a few improvements to the exterior in the form of new bumpers with altered grille, slightly different front wings as well as revised headlights in the way of altered graphics.

There are LED daytime running lights, LED tail lights and a new full LED main beam instead of the Xenon.

As far as the exterior goes, there will be a new range of colour options as well as new alloy wheel designs to choose from.

Interior wise you’ll have to go to the top of the range to fully benefit from the new additions, although all models will be fitted with an updated infotainment system. A large central screen measuring up to 9.2 inches in the top of the range models, with the base models being fitted with 6.5inch screen. These screens can be controlled using either touch, voice or gesture. The dashboard will be revised as well as changes to the door trims.

Safety is still paramount at VW, with features such as autonomous emergency braking coming as standard. The 2017 models with a DSG gearbox will now see the additional safety feature of traffic jam assist as well as trailer assist and a pedestrian monitoring function for the automatic braking.

If you’re wondering how the engine and performance may differ in 2017, The existing 1 litre petrol and the 1.6 and 2 litre diesel engines will be joined by a new 1.5 litre petrol. There will also be ‘cylinder-on-demand technology’ that allows the car to run on just two of its four cylinders for additional economy.

The 1.5 litre TSI Evo model will produce 148bhp whilst the more economical Bluemotion version produces 128bhp. In order to maximise the efficiency the Bluemotion also has the function that allows the engine to switch off when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator, much like a hybrid.

VW have announced that they are introducing a 7-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox which will replace the older 6-speed version.
